Scams on Vinted don’t just affect buyers (already covered in First purchase on Vinted: 8 mistakes to avoid). Sellers are also targeted, using increasingly sophisticated techniques. Here are the 5 types of scams that Vinkit support regularly encounters, along with tips to counter each one.
⚠️ If you have less than 30 days of experience as a Vinted seller, read this article before listing an item over €50. The actual risk is low (~0.8% of transactions according to Vinkit’s internal figures), but it is very real.
Scam #1: The Empty Return Fraud
How it works:
- The buyer purchases your item (Chanel, branded sneakers, etc.)
- Upon receipt, they open a dispute: “counterfeit item” or “not as described”
- Vinted accepts the return
- The buyer sends you back an empty package or one containing a worthless item
- Vinted refunds them, and you receive “nothing” without knowing
- By the time you protest, the dispute period has expired
Observed volume: ~30% of disputes on items over €200 in 2025-2026.
Countermeasures:
- Film the opening of the return package as soon as you receive it (step by step, clearly visible)
- Take photos from all angles right after opening
- Open a Vinted dispute immediately if the package is empty or non-compliant (you have 48 hours)
- For items over €500, systematically film your shipments as well (proof of compliant shipment)
See What to do if the buyer doesn’t pick up their package for other common disputes.
Scam #2: The “Fake Off-Platform Offer”
How it works:
- The buyer messages you privately: “I’m interested, but I prefer to pay directly via PayPal/bank transfer; it’s faster”
- You agree (thinking you’re avoiding the Vinted fee)
- The buyer “pays” via PayPal Friends & Family (= no buyer protection)
- You send the item
- The buyer opens a PayPal dispute claiming “unauthorized transaction”
- PayPal refunds the buyer; you have no recourse because you sold off-platform
Variant: they pay via bank transfer, and the transfer is “lost” or “canceled” 7 days after you receive your package.
Absolute countermeasure: NEVER accept payment off Vinted, period. No exceptions, not even for a friend. The Vinted buyer/seller protection system covers you as long as the transaction goes through their platform.
If a buyer insists, they are dishonest. Don’t think twice, refuse.

Scam #3: The False Collective Reporting
How it works:
- A competitor (or several accomplice accounts) coordinates to report your listings
- More than 5 reports in 24 hours → Vinted automatically suspends your account for verification
- Your listings are removed from the feed
- You lose your ongoing sales
- Lifting the block takes 7-14 days (the time it takes Vinted to manually verify)
Observed volume: ~60 serious cases reported by Vinkit users in 2025-2026, usually on seller accounts achieving over 100 sales/year in a competitive niche.
Countermeasures:
- Don’t give competitors any arguments: descriptions without mention of unowned brands, perfectly compliant photos, honestly declared condition
- If you are targeted, contact Vinted support immediately with proof that your listings are compliant
- Keep everything (high-res photos, proof of purchase for your items, etc.)
See Vinted down or not working for steps in case of account blockage.
Scam #4: The Double Refund Request
How it works:
- The buyer purchases your item and receives it normally
- Confirms receipt → you get paid
- Several days later, they open a dispute “item not received” or “item broken”
- Vinted cannot verify 5 days after confirmation but starts an investigation
- If you don’t respond within 48 hours or fail to provide evidence, Vinted may refund the buyer
Observed volume: 5-8% of disputes in 2025-2026, on the rise.
Countermeasures:
- Check your Vinted notifications at least every 2 days for 30 days after a sale
- In case of a late dispute, respond within 48 hours with evidence (tracking info, photos, past contact with the buyer)
- If the buyer confirmed receipt and left positive feedback, you are very protected. Vinted will refuse in 95% of cases.
- For items over €200, keep photos before shipping + proof of drop-off at the relay point.
Scam #5: The False Shipping Proof (Return Side)
How it works (variant #1):
- The buyer opens a dispute “item not compliant”
- Vinted accepts the return
- The buyer never sends you the package but provides a fake tracking number (stolen from a website, or another package that belongs to them)
- Vinted checks: the tracking seems valid, the package never arrives at your place
- Deadline expires, Vinted refunds the buyer; you receive nothing
Countermeasures:
- Upon opening a return dispute, ask Vinted for the exact return tracking number
- Check this number directly on the carrier’s website (not just in the Vinted app)
- If the package doesn’t arrive within the expected timeframe, immediately report to Vinted with a screenshot from the carrier’s site
- If you are proactive, Vinted will block the automatic refund while waiting.
Generic Red Flags
Before accepting a sale over €50, check the buyer’s profile:
| Signal | Risk |
|---|---|
| Account created < 30 days | ⚠️ Moderate |
| 0 feedback | ⚠️ Moderate |
| Default profile picture | 🟡 Low |
| Empty bio | 🟡 Low |
| Multiple accounts with the same name detected | 🔴 High |
| Recent negative feedback (“suspicious account”) | 🔴 High |
| Request for off-platform payment | 🔴 Immediate refusal |
| First message with obvious mistake “I buy fast by pm pls” | 🔴 High |
For an item over €200, refuse buyers with 2+ red flags. Vinted does not obligate you to sell — you can cancel a sale before shipping without major penalties.

How to Protect Yourself in Advance
Preventive Practices:
- Always photograph your items before packaging (timestamped if possible — iPhone does this natively)
- Film the packaging for items over €200 (wrapping in bubble wrap, taping)
- Keep the drop-off receipt from relay points (not just the digital tracking)
- Keep original invoices for your luxury items (proof of authenticity in case of dispute)
- Immediately block accounts that seem suspicious (Settings → Blocked)
- Do not delete conversations with a disputing buyer (evidence)

What to Do If You Are a Victim
- Ongoing Vinted dispute: provide all evidence within 48 hours
- Off-platform: no recourse via Vinted. Filing a complaint with the police is possible but not very effective for < €500
- Blocked account: contact Vinted support via live chat (Settings → Help → Contact)
- Suspicion of recurring fraud: report the buyer’s profile to Vinted (click “Report” on their profile)
- Item never received return: open a dispute with screenshots of the carrier’s tracking
FAQ
Does Vinted really protect sellers? Yes, but only if you strictly follow the procedures (selling on-platform, proof of shipment, timely responses). Off-platform = no protection.
If I get scammed, will I get my money back? In 65-80% of cases yes, if you provided evidence within the deadlines. Otherwise, it’s a total loss.
Does Vinted block scam accounts? Yes, after several verified reports. But scammers often create new accounts (fake IDs, different IBAN).
Can I refuse to sell to a buyer I don’t trust? Yes. Cancel the sale in the app (reason: “unavailable”) before shipping. Vinted does not penalize for 1-2 cancellations out of 100 sales. Beyond that, your profile gets flagged.
Should I report a scam to the police? For < €500, not very effective. For > €1000, yes (simple complaint). But recourse via Vinted remains your best chance for a quick recovery.
In Summary
5 main scams targeting Vinted sellers in 2026:
- Empty return fraud → film the opening
- Off-platform payment → absolute refusal
- False collective reporting → proof of purchase/compliance
- Double refund request → respond within 48 hours, provide evidence
- False return tracking → verify on the carrier’s site
The absolute rule: every transaction goes through Vinted, without exception. It’s your only safety net. Keep photos and evidence for items over €100.
